Most patients need in-home support for two to six weeks after knee replacement surgery, with the most intensive help required in the first two weeks, when swelling, pain, and limited mobility make walking, bathing, and stairs genuinely risky to manage alone.

The High-Risk First Two Weeks
Falls are the biggest danger after knee replacement, and most happen during this window, often while getting up at night or navigating stairs. A caregiver assists with transfers, walker use, and bathroom safety during the period when the new joint is least stable.
Supporting the Physical Therapy Routine
Knee replacement recovery depends heavily on consistent physical therapy exercises at home between clinic visits. Caregivers help with transportation to PT appointments and can encourage and time at-home exercises, though they do not perform clinical therapy themselves.

Tapering Care as Mobility Returns
As strength and range of motion improve, most families reduce from daily visits to a few times a week, focused on transportation, errands, and household tasks that remain hard to manage while the knee continues healing over the following months.
